May 1, 2017
May is National Foster Care Month. To celebrate the this month, we take a look at some of the complexities of providing emergent care of a Youth (child) in Foster Care.
As EMS Professionals we clearly understand the concept of implied consent, or consent of a minor. However, Youth in Foster Care, have a few other layers of complexity.
The Foster Parents themselves actually don't have the authority to consent for care without other players getting involved. The Foster Parent might need to reach out to a case worker, if the need for medical attention isn't urgent. Also, Foster Parents might not know the medical history of the Youth they are caring for.
Also, since it's National Foster Care Month, we provide some information on how you can investigate being a Foster Parent.
